SQL Server Cluster Installation Pre-Checklist 1

As SQL Dba, you might come across activity like sql server cluster installation on windows 2003 cluster. Before installation of sql server cluster you have to make sure that all required permissions has been given to sql service account. 

Also you have to take care some important things like both nodes are accessible or not. There is possible chance of missing some steps which hurt you while sql server cluster installation in later now. hats why before going for such activity, you should prepare pre-checklist that will tell you how much you have completed and what steps you have to follow.

Pre-checklist for SQL Server 2005 Cluster Installation

1. Check the Physical Node configuration whether they are accessible from each node.

2. Checks the all resources are online and owned by single node.


3. Ensure that SQL Server service account has the following rights:
Act as part of the operating system
Adjust memory quotas for a process
Bypass traverse checking
Log on as a batch job
Log on as a service
Replace a process-level token
Lock Pages in Memory (Only for using AWE on 32-bit)

4. Configure the MSDTC resource in the cluster if you want to install other components like notification service and SQL Server integration service etc on Window Server 2003.


5. Copy the SQL Server Setup media and make sure that folder structure should be correct.

Example D: /SQLSERVER/ folder, under this creates Server and Tools subfolders should present.

* Tools


6. The following services must be started on both nodes:

Task Scheduler

Remote Registry

COM+ System Application


Cryptographic services


Distributed file system


License logging

Logical disk manger



NTLM security

Print spooler


RPC locator


Terminal service


If anyone service is running from the above list, it will display error message box during the setup as below and capture log in file SQLSetup0001_ABRROTHNDT0043_Core (Local).log


“There was an unexpected failure during the setup wizard. You may review the setup logs and/or click the help button for more information.

The service cannot be started, either because it is disabled or because it has no enabled devices associated with it.”


To find more information about error we can check the log file detail which was generated during setup installation C:\Program Files\Microsoft SQL Server\90\Setup Bootstrap\Log\Files\ SQLSetup0001_THNDT_Core(Local).log


Error: Action “RunRemoteSetupAction” failed during execution. Error information reported during run: Attempting to determine log files for remote install.

Connection to remote computer’s scheduler service.

Creating new work item.

Starting remote setup on: PRODDB1

Task did not appear to start on machine: \\PRODDB1: 267013


7.Connect to active node of the cluster using administrator privileges to install sql server cluster setup


Also make sure that you are not connected to any other nodes using Remote desktop or Terminal Services session if connected please log off to avoid conflict while sql server cluster setup.
