Installation of MS Sql Server 2008 on Windows 2003 cluster 1

you might come across activity like sql server 2008 cluster installation on windows 2003 cluster. Before installation of sql server 2008 cluster, you have to make sure that all required permissions has been given to sql service account.

Important things can be monitor by using below pre and post checklist.

Follow instructions pre and post install / upgrade checklist

Pre Install tasks-   ( Complete the Pre-install tasks on all nodes of cluster)

* Install can be performed by logging on Server with Service ID only

* Log on to the machine as a local administrator. (all nodes)

This account must be a direct member of the local administrators group and been granted the following permission’s at

LOCAL SECURITY POLICY:

1.  Log on each node.

2.   Go to Start–>admin tools–>Local Security Policy.

Right panel will display all policy, double click on policy to open, Click on “Add user or group” to add service ID.

Give the following permission for Service ID

a. Act as Part of the Operating System = SeTcbPrivilege

b. Bypass Traverse Checking = SeChangeNotify

c. Lock Pages In Memory = SeLockMemory

d. Log on as a Batch Job = SeBatchLogonRight

e. Log on as a Service = SeServiceLogonRight

f.  Replace a Process Level Token = SeAssignPrimaryTokenPrivilege

1. Installation ID requires “debug program ” privileges.

   To grant “Debug Program” privilege, Log on each node,

Go to Start–>admin tools–>Local Security Policy.

Find “Debug programs” on right panel, double click to open, Click on “Add user or group” and add service ID.

Note – If you added Installation ID to DEBUG Programs (local security policy) , you must reboot server(s) before starting Installation

2. Install hotfix937444 on each node – Verify if hotfix is already applied by looking for the hotfix in add\remove programs

Run WindowsServer2003.WindowsXP-KB937444-x64-ENU.exe  for 64BIT servers or  WindowsServer2003-KB937444-x86-ENU.exe for 32 BIT servers

  •                   Double click to launch the Install
  •                   Click  “NEXT”
  •                   Select “I Agree” and Click on “NEXT”
  •                   Click on Finish

3. Install Dot net 3.5 – Verify if dont3.5  is already applied by looking for the dontnet 3.5  in add\remove programs

  •                   Run dotNetFx35setup.exe
  •                   Click on “I accept ..” and click next
  •                   Click Exit and  and click on reboot when prompted

4. Install Windows installer – Verify if Windows installer 4.5  is already applied by looking for it  in add\remove programs

5. Make sure WMI service is running

Go to Admin tools –>services, Verify if “Windows Management Instrumentation” Service is running on all nodes.

If service is not running, start it.

Before  SQL 2008 Installation:

  1. STOP the following services:

  •       STOP  McAfee Framework Service, Go to Administrative Tools -> Services. Right click on the McAfee Framework Service and  click stop.
  •       STOP  Network Associates McShield, Go to Administrative Tools -> Services, Right click on the Network Associates McShield and click stop.
  •        STOP  Network Associates Task Manager,  Go to Administrative Tools -> Services, Right click on the Network Associates Task Manager and click stop.

II -Installation –

1.  On a 2 node cluster, start  the install.

2. Make sure there are no resources other than physical disk created in the cluster group are using for this install.

  1. Copy software to D:\ drive
  2. Launch setup.exe.
  3. On “SQL server installation center” Screen, Click on Installation on left panel

4. Click on “New SQL Server failover Cluster Installation”

5. On “Setup Support Rules” , Click OK

6. Click Install

7. On Setup Support Rules , make sure there are no errors. Verify status on checklist by clicking “Show details button”,  Click Next

8. On PRODUCT KEY screen, Click NEXT

9. On License Terms Screen, Check “I accept..” Click Next

10. On Feature selection Screen, Check Database Engine Services, SQL Server replication, Full text search. Make sure shared feature Directory is “D:\program files\Microsoft SQL server”, Click Next

Note – Following Features must be selected for initial installation

11.    On “Instance Configuration Screen”, SQL server Network name – Virtual server name (ex- “BTSQLDB” ), Click on named Instance (ex- SQL222), Instance ID is populated same as Instance name, Instance root directory – D:\Program Files\Microsoft SQL Server\

. CLICK NEXT   (Make sure  root directory is pointing to D:\  not C:\)

  1. On “Disk Space requirement” Click NEXT
  2. On Cluster resource group , pick right cluster group
  3. On “Cluster Disk Selection ” Screen pick the right drive letter.
  4. On Cluster network configuration Screen, check public network, enter IP address, Click next
  5. On Cluster security policy screen, enter domain group.
  6. On server configuration screen, provide SQL server , Agent and full text.
  7. On database engine configuration screen,
  • On account provisioning tab, Choose windows authentication mode. To specify SQL server admins, Click on current user, click add.
  • leave default collation if collation is not specified
    •  On add MSSQLServer to data root directory (ex – D:\MSSQLServer\Data)
    • Click next
  1. Click next on error and usage reporting screen
  2. Click next
  3. Click Install
  4. Setup completed

 

Add other nodes –  (make sure you completed pre install  tasks , see beginning of this blog )

Log on the node that needs to be clustered.

  • Launch Setup.exe 

Click on “Add node to a SQL server failover cluster”

How to add node in sql server 2008

 

  • On “Setup Support Rules” ,Click OK
  • Click Install
  • On PRODUCT KEY screen, Click NEXT
  • On License Terms Screen, Check “I accept..” Click Next
  • On Setup Support Rules , make sure there are no errors. Verify status on checklist by clicking “Show details button”,  Click Next

On cluster node config , make sure to pick right instance name

  • On service accounts screen, provide SQL server , Agent and full text
  • Click next
  • Click next
  • Click install
  • Click next

****Go to Administrative tools Local security Policy. Under user rights assignment locate “Perform volume maintenance tasks” and add SQL server service Account to this policy. This step must be repeated on all nodes of the cluster.
