In SQL Server 2005, whenever you want to install service pack or hotfix on cluster always start with the active node of the cluster and apply the service pack. While installing service on active node it will automatically get applied on passive node at the same time.
How to install Sql server 2008 service pack on failover cluster?
As compare to Sql server 2005 cluster failover, installing service pack on Sql server 2008 in failover cluster is different.
To reduce the downtime, here we have to follow reverse order of deployment in Sql server 2008. Now while installing service pack or hotfix on failover cluster, you must start from passive node first. The passive nodes are updated before the active node.
Follow the steps to apply any hotfix or service pack on sql server 2008 in failover cluster environment.
1. Login to passive node and apply the service pack or hotfix.
2. After installation reboot the passive node.
3. Move the SQL resource on passive node using cluster administrator, now the passive node becomes the active node.
4. Login to current passive node and apply the service pack or hotfix.
5. Reboot the passive node.
